FPGA component technology for easy integration of hardware and software

Abstract

FPGA has become popular as a device which can realize energy efficient processing by optimized and parallel processing for a specific application. However, development productivity of FPGA is much worse than software development. High-level synthesis is emerging in recent years to implement FPGA circuits with C, Java and so on. However, it is still difficult for software engineers to handle. To raise the productivity of a hardware(HW)/software(SW) system, componentization of FPGA can be a solution for the problem. To raise the productivity of a HW/SW system, it is necessary to realize reusability of the designs of HW and SW. In the seminar, methods of wrapping FPGA circuit as a component are presented, which have software friendly interfaces on FPGA at several abstraction levels.

Bio

Takeshi Ohkawa is an Assistant Professor in Utsunomiya University, Japan. He received his M.E. and Ph.D. from Tohoku University in 2000 and 2003, respectively, and was engaged in research on dynamically reconfigurable FPGA device/tools and system at Tohoku University. He joined National Institute for Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in 2004 and started research on distributed embedded systems. He had been working in TOPS Systems Corp on heterogeneous multicore processor hardware and software design from 2009 to 2011. His current research interests are design technology and tools for FPGA to realize low power robots and vision systems.
